Sometimes around the holidays, celebrities will chip in and pay off some peoples’ layaway items at Walmart. It happens every year, but usually from different celebrities. Tyler Perry just did it this year at a couple stores in Atlanta, near where he lives.
Tyler admitted that he was inspired by another celebrity doing the same thing. That’s when he decided to go ahead and do it too. Tyler was watching Good Morning America when he saw the story about Gayle Benson, owner of the New Orleans Saints, paying off items at Walmarts around New Orleans. Tyler decided pretty quickly to do it, so he went to one Walmart near his home and pays off everything at layaway, except for one penny. The remaining balance the customer would have to pay to pick up their things is just one cent. Not bad.
After the first store, Tyler decided to head to another Walmart and do the same things there. In total, he wrote a couple checks and spent more than $430 thousand. That’s a significant chunk of change, no matter your celebrity status. Tyler Perry says he wanted to do it anonymously, but it didn’t work out so well. Here’s a video he shared:
