A security guard working outside a Safeway in Midtown Sacramento is currently behind bars for using excessive force against a homeless man.

CBS Sacramento has reported that the guard, Michael Johnson, injured the elderly homeless man so severely, he may not survive his injuries.

Johnson, however, claims he was just doing his job. He says the homeless man was acting erratically, talking to himself, and yelling out.

When Johnson tried to escort him from the property, the man fought back and began spitting and using racial slurs. Johnson explained:

“I literally picked him up, put him to the ground and that was it. I didn’t punch him, I didn’t hit him, I literally just walked away.”

Police, on the other hand, believe there’s more to the story. Police Sergeant Bryce Heinlein gave a statement, saying:

“I think there’s a little more to the situation that developed where maybe too much force was used.”
