We’re already allowed to park for free on the streets of Downtown Sacramento on certain holidays. New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day are all freebies.

Starting in 2019, four more holidays will be added to the list; Martin Luther King Jr.  Day, Presidents Day, Veterans Day and Cesar Chavez’s Birthday.

The change was brought about when those – thinking parking was free on all city holidays – got tickets while participating in January’s MLK march, says The Sacramento Bee. Councilwoman Angelique Ashby then asked the city staff to add MLK Day as a free parking holiday.

The city ultimately decided to add the other three city holidays to avoid confusion.
