On Monday, 20th Century Fox released an official statement saying that director Bryan Singer will no longer be a part of the upcoming Queen biopic, Bohemian Rhapsody.

Singer was fired after reports were made that he had a prolonged absence on set, leading to a production shutdown. According to the Hollywood Reporter, he was often missing from set and did not return after the Thanksgiving break, which was the final straw. Rami Malek, who is starring in the film as Freddie Mercury, made complaints to the studio regarding Singer’s unprofessional and unreliable behavior.

There were reports of growing tensions between Singer and Malek previously, as well. The two engaged in a confrontation, with the director throwing an object during their altercation. They had settled their differences and agreed to continue finishing the film, but Singer’s absence after Thanksgiving resulted in his dismissal.

Singer wrote in a statement:

“Rumors that my unexpected departure from the film was sparked by a dispute I had with Rami Malek are not true.  While, at times, we did have creative differences on set, Rami and I successfully put those differences behind us and continued to work on the film together until just prior to Thanksgiving.”

The studio is expected to name a new director for the project within the next few days.
