The long-running Barnum’s Animals cracker box has gotten a redesign, thanks to some pressure from PETA about showing animals caged in the art.

Barnum’s Animals crackers, you know ’em, the box that has pictures of the animals on the box. The art has been redesigned though, and it’s because PETA sort of pressured them to do so.

You’ve seen the box at some point in your life, if they’re not in your pantry already. It’s the red box that has the cartoon animals on the front. The animals were shown in a train car, poking their heads through the bars on the windows. It was a nod to the circus when performing animals were brought to town in train cars. It’s sort of a history of how things were done.

Enter PETA, the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. They’ve been pressuring Nabisco and parent company Mondelez to change the box for some time. The redesign has actually been in the works for a couple years, due to some other changes along the way. The Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey circus is where the name came from. During the redesign process, the real circus stopped using elephants in their shows, and then eventually closed for good in May of 2017. Nabisco had to redesign the redesign. The new box art shows all the animals side-by-side in a field, rather than in cages and train boxcars.

The Chief Marketing Officer for the parent company of the animal crackers, Jason Levine, says “When PETA reached out about Barnum’s, we saw this as another great opportunity to continue to keep this brand modern and contemporary.” That does seem to make sense, you have to adapt to the times in a way to remain successful, I suppose. Here’s a look at the new box below:
