John Goodman finally spoke out on ABC’s decision to cancel the Roseanne reboot following Roseanne Barr’s racist remarks on Twitter.
Back in May, Barr tweeted: “Muslim brotherhood & planet of the apes had a baby=vj”. She was referring to former Barack Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett, an African-American woman. After receiving heavy backlash, ABC president Channing Dungey responded to her comment. He wrote in an official statement that her words were “abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values,” then announced “we have decided to cancel her show”.
Goodman revealed that the network’s decision “surprised” him. “I’ll put it this way, I was surprised at the response… And that’s probably all I should say about it,” he the told The Times.

“[B]ut I thought, ‘OK, it’s just show business, I’m going to let it go,'” he added. “But I went through a period, about a month, where I was very depressed. I’m a depressive anyway, so any excuse that I can get to lower myself, I will. But that had a great deal to do with it, more than I wanted to admit.”
“I know, I know, for a fact that she’s not a racist,” he continued after a pause.
Goodman will be returning for the Roseanne spin-off series, The Conners, which follows the family without Barr. So far, there’s no news as to how the show will handle writing off the lead character.
The Conners premieres on Tuesday, Oct. 16 on ABC.
