A California Ghost Lake is Set to Reappear

A lake that was once the largest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi River is set to reappear as our historic snowpack starts to melt this spring.
Tulare Lake was fed by melting Sierra snowpack until it dried up 80 years ago. Since then, it’s been turned into farmland. This year’s relentless rain has flooded much of the area and when the spring snowmelt happens, the lake is almost certain to reappear, according to geologists. In fact, as waters rise, people have been taking kayaks out in it, which is being discouraged by law enforcement.
Once it fills back up, it could take a while to recede. “This will last through the summer most likely around September,” explained Kings County Sheriff David Robinson. The bad news is that farmers won’t be able to grow crops in the flooded land and that will lead to higher produce prices for everyone later this year.
