Many people are working from home, or in some sort of adjusted arrangement. The kids are home, and maybe you’re feeling disconnected from your normal life. Here at Mix 96 we are going through the exact same thing.

Currently, Darik is doing the morning show in-studio, Marilyn is also working from the studio, but I am working from home. I’ve set up a little studio in a closet in my apartment. I am actually really proud of it. Each afternoon I work the way I normally would, except I don’t leave the apartment.

The problem with this new arrangement, like yours I would imagine, is that I don’t get that regular facetime with my co-workers. Having a good relationship with your co-workers (especially in a small operation like ours) is crucial to overall happiness. But how do you do that when you don’t really see each other? I have been wondering the same thing.

My favorite thing I found in response to my various web searches is this resource from MuseumHack.com called ‘51 Fun Virtual Team Building Activities For Remote Teams,’ here are a few that stood out to me:

MTV Cribs: Remote Team Edition – “It makes for both an interesting look into the personal lives of your co-workers and is also a hilarious way to get to know your entire team better.”

Quarterly Christmas Gift Exchange – “Quarterly Christmas is effective team building for remote teams because getting a surprise package is like a little burst of sunshine in an otherwise cloudy day.”

Exchange Recipes – “In the last few months, sales of dumpling making ingredients in China have skyrocketed; people are cooking and eating at home more often. This love for cooking and eating is generally popular worldwide.”

“Pub” Trivia – “For these video conference games, invite everyone to a call and let them know they can bring a pint of their favorite brew; whether that beverage is tea, beer or wine. Then, a host organizes everyone into smaller teams and reads out questions.”

Virtual Show & Tell – “To facilitate this show and tell, you can set a 1 minute timer for participants to find “something within arms reach that is meaningful to you.” Each of your team members then has one minute to share about their object, including information like where they got it, and why they keep it.”

The key is to keep the communication lines open, and during times such as these…a little distraction is good for everyone. I look forward to talking to you every afternoon, from home, on Mix 96! Stay healthy friends, and let me know if you try one of these, I’d love to hear how it went! – kory@mix96sac.com
