If you’ve got a student looking at colleges, no doubt you’ve experienced the sticker shock that comes along with the cost of higher education these days. It’s expensive! Scholarships are one way to lower those costs and experts say there are 3 things you can do to increase your odds of getting free money for college.

1. Find obscure scholarships. Thousands of businesses now offer college scholarships, and while most of them aren’t for a lot of money, every little bit helps! Here are just a few . . .

You can get a scholarship for saying what dead person you want to meet. For making a video telling jokes. For sharing a brand you like. For wearing Duct Tape to prom. For giving a tip on how to get deals. Or even for advice on how to survive the zombie apocalypse. LOL!

2. Ask the people behind the scholarship for advice. The people giving out a scholarship know what they’re looking for. So ask them. Not only will you get good tips on how to win the scholarship, but they’ll also be looking for your application when it comes in.

3. Follow ALL the instructions, especially the optional ones. Make sure you follow every instruction for the scholarship. And if there’s an optional requirement, do it. This combo of attention to detail and extra effort alone will vault you ahead of the pack.
