Why You Should NOT take the #AgeChallenge | Amanda & Darik

By Admin on July 18, 2019

All of a sudden all your friends have aged 60 years on Instagram and Facebook.  What is happening? It’s the #AgeChallenge started by the FaceApp.

The problem is FaceApp is a privacy nightmare.  It’s run by a company in Russia that’s uploading all the photos to a server , and you’ve given them permission to do that.  It doesn’t SEEM like they’re doing anything bad with the pictures, but there’s nothing stopping them.

What is FaceApp?

The app uses AI to alter your photos. The most popular way to use it has been the filter that makes you look OLD, it can also make you look younger.

Why is it a privacy nightmare?

Turns out Face App is made by a company in Russia.  You’re giving it access to all of your photos.  And in their privacy policy, by using the app, you grant them permission to use your altered AND non-altered photos however they want for eternity.

It also immediately uploads your photos to a server rather than just processing them on your phone.  The company says they’re using a data center in the U.S., but there’s nothing stopping them from moving those photos elsewhere.

So is this a Russian project to build a facial recognition database on all of us?  It doesn’t seem that way.  Could it turn into that if they wanted it to?  Yep.  And there’s nothing you can do about it now if you’ve used the app.

Just another reason to NEVER take one of those hashtag-internet-challenges ever.

Darik took the challenge and Amanda refused.  Not because she was protecting privacy, it was purely vanity! Listen to Amanda & Darik discuss this and more weekdays 5-10am on Mix96
