Target In Trouble For Selling ‘Baby Daddy’ Father’s Day Cards

Target was selling a “Baby Daddy” Father’s Day card, but once social media got ahold of it, they issued an apology and pulled the card.

First of all, I didn’t even know that Target was selling “Baby Daddy” father’s day cards in the first place. But now they’ve pulled the cards from their stores, saying that they were offensive.

Apparently there was just one card that was for sale that says “baby daddy.” People are saying it’s racially insensitive though, based on the front. On the cover of the card, there’s an image of what appears to be a black couple, according to the source. Inside, the card says “You’re a wonderful husband and father — and I’m so grateful to have you as my partner, my friend, and my baby daddy! Happy Father’s Day.”

In a statement, the company that distributed the card said “This particular card was created for, and addressed to, a loving husband — which the inside copy makes clear… However, we now see that the front page, taken out of context, can communicate an unintentional meaning that we are strongly against perpetuating and is not consistent with our company purpose and values. We should do better in the future, and we will. We have notified our store merchandisers to remove the card from the shelves and apologize for any offense we’ve caused.”

Here’s a picture of the card from someone on Facebook who was not amused:

Should Target be catching some of the flack for selling the card? Remember, the cards are stocked by a merchandiser, not a Target official. However, should Target be more aware of the things they’re selling in situations like this? If it the picture of the couple wasn’t on the card, would it be humorous?
