Ever felt an overwhelming desire to cry and then talked yourself out of it? It seems that we have been told to suppress our tears our entire lives but, it turns out, that attitude is all wrong!

Forbes has published this new study out of Australia that finds crying can actually be good for your health.

I know right!?

The researchers found that people who let their tears just flow on out had lower stress levels, more controlled breathing, and lower heart rates than people who didn’t cry.

Another interesting finding was that right before crying, participants tended to experience decreases in their heart rates, seemingly in anticipation of the crying. Once the crying began, their heart rates then tended to creep back up but not above where their heart rates had been before everything began. This may be further evidence that crying has a beneficial regulatory effect on your physiology.

Next time you feel the need to cry…just let it out!
