If you’re heading to the Bay Area this weekend to escape the heat, good for you! But, it’s going to be tricky getting back home. Caltrans is set to close eastbound I-80 for a paving project every other weekend until Labor Day.

Starting this weekend, as well as the weekends of August 4th and August 14, the eastbound lanes of Interstate 80 heading toward Sacramento are scheduled to be closed between Hercules and Crockett. The 56 hour closure starts at 9 p.m. Friday night until 5 a.m. Monday morning. Traffic will be detoured off the interstate at highway 4 in Hercules.

To get back to Sacramento from the Bay Area you’ll exit eastbound I-80 in Hercules and get on eastbound Hwy 4. Continue to northbound 680, cross the Benicia Bridge and stay on 680 until you get back on eastbound I-80 in Fairfield.

Another option is to take Highway 4 to northbound 680. Then head west on 780 and reenter eastbound I-80 in Vallejo.

During the Labor Day weekend, Caltrans will start work in the opposite direction. That’s when all the westbound lanes of 80 will be closed.
