Tom Hanks is playing Mr. Rogers in an upcoming biopic titled You Are My Friend.

According to Variety, the biopic will cover the friendship between Fred Rogers and award-winning journalist Tom Junod. Furthermore, the story is of a cynical journalist who has to take an assignment to write a piece on Mr. Rogers. Junod finds that his perspective on life changes after meeting and befriending the icon. You can read the article that Junod published for Esquire in 1998 by clicking here.

Just from that description, you can already tell this is going to pull your heartstrings. Really, the fact that it’s a biopic on Mr. Rogers means it’s got to be good.

Diary of a Teenage Girl director Marielle Heller is directing this film. She said:

“As a mother, I am so inspired by the teachings of Fred Rogers and as a human I am in awe of his life’s work. I can’t wait to bring his story to the public and be a part of such a thoughtful, smart group of people who are all coming together to make this film, which truly feels to me like an antidote to our very fractured culture.”

Production for You Are My Friend will likely begin in the fall.
