As the California coronavirus death toll passes 1,000, the city of Santa Cruz is reopening its parks and beaches.

KRON reports the areas are now open to the public, however the stay-at-home order remains in effect. Social distancing will also continue to be enforced.

“While outdoor exercise is considered an essential activity, it should be done close to home. Residents are advised to use outdoor City facilities within their neighborhoods. Travelling to a destination for exercise continues to be considered non-essential,” according to a statement by the city.

A temporary order closing the public areas expired earlier this week, opening up all parks, beaches, open spaces, multi-use trails and the Santa Cruz Wharf.

If shelter-in-place orders are not being followed officials say they may have to initiate additional closures.
