A new year means a new area code in Sacramento.

The California Public Utilities Commission is starting to overlay the 279 area code in the 916 area code territory. So, what does that mean to you?

Well, you now need to dial the area code with every call you make, all ten digits. That means you’ll probably have to re-program some of your contacts stored in your phone with the 916 area code.

You also may need to reprogram services tied to phone numbers like life-safety systems, medical monitoring systems, security systems, and fire and burglar alarms. If your panel isn’t updated or replaced, it could mean you won’t have protection. 10-digit dialing will be mandatory starting in February of 2018.
