According to the Sacramento Valley Region Report, our hometown is en route to become as hot as Phoenix. And it’s at risk of happening sooner than you might think… within 50 years.
On Aug. 27, the report was released as part of California’s fourth Climate Change Assessment. It states that Sacramento is going to be prone to more wildfires, flooding, and mega-droughts in the coming decades. According to UC Davis’ Benjamin Houlton, one of the study’s authors, the area between Shasta and the Delta could bear more resemblance to Phoenix by the end of the century.
“We typically had about four days per year [in Sacramento] where it would exceed 104 degrees,” he said. “We’re going to be looking at 40 days per year where the temperature exceeds 104 degrees. This is going to be a tremendous challenge on public health.”
There are suggestions on how to best handle the environmental threats posed in the report. Houlton hopes that the communities will step up to effectively tackle the problems.
“We’re going to have to find ways to innovate through this problem,” he continued. “I think this could be an opportunity for the region rather than a downer in terms of how we live our daily lives.”
