Sacramento County has become the first in the state to require panic buttons for hotel workers. Supervisors hope this will protect staffers against sexual harassment.

Mayor Darrell Steinberg and Councilman Eric Guerra praised this action. Similar protections may soon appear throughout the city of Sacramento.

The Sacramento Bee reports that Supervisor Phil Serna proposed the measure. He argued that hotel housekeepers need protection because women often enter into men’s rooms alone. Several female hotel workers came forward to share stories at a supervisor’s session. The staffers relayed stores of male guests exposing themselves or performing sex acts in front of them.

Serna said, after the vote passed 4-1:

“I’m grateful that a majority of my colleagues understand just how important these measures are to protect women in the workplace.”

It’s still not clear how exactly the panic button will be enforced in the hotels, but it is a requirement. The hotels also need to have a sexual harassment policy on file.
