New research found that intelligence genes transmit directly from moms. Previously, researchers believed that intelligence came from both mom and dad equally.

It turns out that intelligence genes are located chromosome X. Because women carry two X chromosomes, kids are more likely to get their mom’s intelligence. The study by Psychology Spot found the following information about embryo development:

“The paternal genes accumulate in some areas of the emotional brain: hypothalamus, amygdala, the preoptic area and the septum. These areas are part of the limbic system, which is responsible for ensuring our survival and is involved in functions such as sex, food and aggression.

“However, researchers have not found any paternal cells in the cerebral cortex, which is where they develop the most advanced cognitive functions, such as intelligence, thought, language and planning.”

Apparently, the intelligence genes that are passed down from dad become deactivated. They only work if they come from mom:

“If that same gene is inherited from the father, it is deactivated. Obviously, other genes work the opposite, are activated only if they come from the father.”

The study also estimated that “between 40 and 60 percent of intelligence is hereditary.”

That means the remainder is determined by environment and stimulation. Another important fact to note from the research is that intelligence levels decline without active and constant problem solving.

So go pick up that Rubik’s Cube you forgot you had and solve it!
