Millennials Have More Successful Marriages Than Parents’ Generation

Millennials reportedly have much lower divorce rates than their parents’ generation, according to a study. Take a look at why.

Millennials reportedly have much lower divorce rates than their parents’ generation, according to a study.

Philip Cohen, a University of Maryland sociology professor, found that Americans under 45 tend to stay married. According to an analysis done by Cohen, the divorce rate has dropped 18 percent from 2008 to 2016.

One of the major reasons why this is the case is because young couples are more careful choosing partners and waiting for more financial stability before tying the knot.

“Marriage is more and more an achievement of status, rather than something that people do regardless of how they’re doing,” Bloomberg reports Cohen said. “The trends described here represent progress toward a system in which marriage is rarer and more stable than it was in the past.”

Cohen specifically pointed out that millennial women make up a big part of the decline. Nowadays, they typically have at least a bachelor’s degree, and are less likely to have kids when entering into a marriage.
