Did Miley Cyrus and her label, RCA Records, steal lyrics for her smash hit, “We Can’t Stop”? Well, that’s exactly what a man named Michael May is now claiming in a new lawsuit.

According to Billboard, May (who uses the stage name Flourgon) is suing Cyrus for $300 million for misappropriating lyrics from his 1988 hit, “We Run Things.”

Although the song may not be well-known in the U.S., it reportedly was a No. 1 Hit in Jamaica. As described in the lawsuit, May’s song includes the line “We run things/ Things no run we,” while in “We Can’t Stop,” Cyrus sings “We run things/ Things don’t run we.”

While it may not seem like much, Michael May believes his lyrics provide the base for her song. He stated in his lawsuit:

“[‘We Can’t Stop’] owes the basis of its chart-topping popularity to and its highly lucrative success to plaintiff May’s protected, unique, creative and original content.”

His complaint also requests a halt to all further sales and performances of the song. Surprisingly, the other co-writers of Cyrus’ hit do not appear to be named in the suit.

As of now, Miley Cyrus and her team have yet to comment. Considering that she recently had to deal with a stalker, she might have other issues on her plate.
