Although all the other nominees for Album of the Year at the Grammys performed (except Jay-Z, who declined to offer), Lorde chose not to go on stage.

All the nominees for the Grammy Awards Album of the Year last night hit the stage for a solo performance. All, that is, except for Jay-Z and Lorde.

Jay-Z reportedly declined to offer, but the situation with Lorde is a little… weird. According to a source close to the singer, Grammy producers approached her to perform. However, unlike her fellow male nominees, she had to perform someone else’s song.  The source told Variety that producers asked her to be a part of a group tribute to Tom Petty. Also, they apparently asked her to sing “American Girl,” which is a bit strange to ask of a New Zealand native.

All of the other Album of the Year nominees (including Jay-Z) could perform songs from their nominated albums solo, continued the source. The other nominees included Bruno Mars, Childish Gambino, Kendrick Lamar, and Jay-Z.

After going back and forth, Lorde ultimately declined to perform.
