Antonia Nicol told the story of how her late mother shared one last joke before she died of cancer.

Antonia’s mom, Phedre Fitton, and dad, Nigel, were living in South Africa before she passed away in 2013. Phedre had been living with cancer for five years. Antonia flew back and forth from her London home to help her dad after her mom died. She recently helped him move into a retirement home.

Antonia said:

“My dad stayed in the house as it was for a couple of years. He didn’t want to change anything.”

Before she passed, Phedre gave strict instructions to Nigel to water the plant in the bathroom. Nigel took those words to heart and never went a day without caring for the plant, reports Buzzfeed. Under Nigel’s care, the plant stayed alive and looked vibrant as ever. He was very proud.

However, when Antonia arrived to help Nigel move into the retirement home, she noticed something. The bathroom plant was made of plastic. Phedre purposely replaced the real plant with a fake.

Nigel and Antonia immediately recognized this as one final prank Phedre pulled on them. Antonia recalled:

“It was so funny when we found out, we laughed so much. It was like she was there with us again.”

Antonia said she could “hear [her] chuckling” over Antonia and Nigel finally getting the joke, years later.
