Three men recently baffled authorities by stealing something quite bizarre from the San Antonio Aquarium: a horn shark.

According to Radar Online, the theft took place last Saturday in the afternoon and cameras caught it all on tape. At around 2:15, one man reached into a tank and grabbed the shark, before stuffing it into a baby stroller. Then, all three took off out of the aquarium as fast as they could.

While staff members had been keeping an eye on the three before the theft, they were unable to stop them. The San Antonio Aquarium explained in a statement:

“On Saturday, July 28th one of our employees reported seeing suspicious activity from three people around one of our interactive shark touch pools. Management caught up to the suspects in the parking lot and were denied access to both searching the vehicle and the stroller… The 16-inch-long horn shark was stolen from our tide pool exhibit while the attendant was assisting other guests. The suspects staked out the pool for more than an hour to wait for this opportunity.”

However, the thieves also worked to distract the staff by pouring bleach into other fish tanks. It’s not clear how much damage the bleach may have done, but the aquarium representatives said:

“If it weren’t for the fast acting experienced staff, the bleach would have done more damage.”

Some time after the theft, a Facebook user reported seeing an ad where a man was attempting to sell a horn shark for $300. While it’s unclear if it was a real post from the thieves, the listing was later deleted.

Thankfully, police were able to apprehend the three men and arrest them, and two of the suspects already confessed to the crime. Even better, the aquarium was able to get the horn shark back as well. We hope it’s doing okay after it’s very stressful encounter.
