As of 9:45 a.m. this morning, one of the most beautiful stretches is back open.
Cal Trans has spent the last 14 months repairing Highway 1 near Big Sur. Strong storms caused debris to bury the scenic stretch of highway, forcing Cal Trans to rebuild a road on top the rocks and dirt. SFGate reports that the $54 million project was done ahead of schedule, which is a relief to locals and businesses who have suffered losses due to the closure.
