Greta Gerwig became the fifth woman in history nominated for a best-director Oscar this morning, and we couldn’t be more proud.

Gerwig is the only woman nominated in the otherwise all-male field made up of Paul Thomas Anderson (Phantom Thread), Guillermo del Toro (The Shape of Water), Christopher Nolan (Dunkirk) and Jordan Peele (Get Out).

Lady Bird also grabbed nominations in five major categories, including Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay. Saoirse Ronan is nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role. Laurie Metcalf also gets a nod for Best Supporting Actress.

As you probably know by now, the movie Lady Bird was filmed and is based here in Sacramento. The movie’s director Greta Gerwig – who went to St. Francis High School – calls it her “love letter to Sacramento.”

The Hollywood Reporter points out that in the Academy Awards’ 90-year history only four women women had been nominated for a best director Oscar prior to Gerwigs nomination” Lina Wertmuller (Seven Beauties), Jane Campion (The Piano), Sofia Coppola (Lost in Translation) and Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker). Bigelow is the only woman to win the award in 2010.

And if you haven’t seen Lady Bird yet, you really need to. I recommend seeing it at the Tower Theater.
