Ewan McGregor has been cast as the lead character in the upcoming The Shining sequel. He’s playing  Danny Torrance, all grown up.

The new film, Doctor Sleep, will follow the plot line of the Stephen King novel of the same name. The book was published back in 2013. King himself has also given his “blessing” to the casting of McGregor, reports Variety. The actor beat out the likes of Matt Smith, Chris Evans, and Jeremy Renner for the lead role.

The movie will be about Danny’s lingering trauma from the childhood events that perspired in the Overlook Hotel. He develops a drinking problem, which dulls the painful memories as well as his “shining” powers.

Danny then chooses to become sober and uses his gift to help those dying in a hospice. There he meets a young girl who shares his ability who is being chased down by a group with similar powers. The two discover that their powers strengthen when they inhale the “steam” that comes from others who have the power to shine. But only while they are suffering from a painful death.

Doctor Sleep will be directed by Mike Flanagan. The current release date is slated for January 24, 2020.
