Millions of Americans are now unemployed due to the COVID-19 recession, leaving many families with financial uncertainty and food uncertainty.

Our friends at KCRA 3 have some great resources to help as you navigate these challenges. For starters, if you’re unemployed and finding yourself frustrated with the EDD system, you’ll have a change to ask your questions to Sacramento City Councilmember and Vice Mayor Eric Guerra. He will host a Facebook live workshop at 2pm today (Thursday) to provide help and resources. Guerra will answer questions, so bring yours!

What about food? Food insecurity is a major issue for unemployed families here in our region and lines at the food bank are longer than ever.

KCRA writes, “Before the outbreak, the food bank reported serving 150,000 people per month, but now serves 225,000 people per month as the need for food help has risen dramatically.” If you are planning to go to the food bank…there are a couple of things you’ll need to know before you go.

“Residents should make sure to have an ID with them, according to Melanie Flood, with the Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services. She says people should not be embarrassed to use the services, because the food bank is “here to make sure their families are well-nourished.”

Flood also encourages residents who no longer need the food bank’s services to consider giving back, if possible.”

It’s a tough time, but if we all look out for each other. I think we’ll make it through.

KCRA has a list of job hunting resources, online classes, and more at their website.
