Claire’s was the big thing in the mall for teen girls, but maybe not for much longer. The retail Icon just announced it’s the latest in a long line of retailer to file for bankruptcy protection.
Claire’s is know for being the store at the mall as the place to go for inexpensive jewelry, makeup – and if you were one of the lucky ones – to get your ears pierced. The iconic store entered into chapter 11 as it struggles to reduce billions of dollars of debt, although the chain was profitable in 2017, according to USA Today.
According to retail bankruptcy reporter Mitch Nolen, the company plans to close 92 stores, including one in the Sacramento area. The Claire’s store at Sunrise Mall in Citrus Heights appears to be on the chopping block.
Claire's declares #bankruptcy and 92 Claire's and Icing stores are closing, including at the Mall of America. These stores could close fast — the company is seeking to shut many of them by the end of this month, and the rest by the end of April. Here's a list: pic.twitter.com/2dni25ycTf
