You’ll still have to use detours this summer.

Caltrans is hoping to have a portion of Highway 1 near Big Sur reopened by mid-September.

Highway 1 has been closed since December of 2016 after mudslides caused damage to various spots from Ragged Point to Big Sur, forcing thousands of travelers to take long detours. Since then, Caltrans has been working to build a new roadway over the top of the slide by covering the old road with lots of dirt.

Caltrans says even after the highway reopens, some intermittent land closures can be expected, according to the Sacramento Bee. There will be another progress update sometime in June.
