In next year’s big Marvel movie, Captain MarvelBrie Larson will be taking on the title role as the intergalactic superhero. Her character was first introduced as a mysterious name mentioned at the end of this summer’s blockbuster, Avengers: Infinity War. Before she appears to help the heroes in the next Avengers 4 movie, Larson will be starring in her own movie that will introduce the character March 8, 2019.

In an exclusive interview and cover story by Entertainment Weekly, new information has been gathered about this female-centered superhero film. This will be Marvel’s 21’st film in its cinematic universe, and the first to feature a female superhero headlining her own movie. Brie Larson will play Carol Danvers, an Air-Force pilot who becomes the titular space superhero, Captain Marvel.

“She can’t help but be herself,” Larson explained. “She can be aggressive, and she can have a temper, and she can be a little invasive and in your face.” Larson’s character will reportedly struggle with finding her place as a hero, while also balancing her life on Earth. Taking place in the mid-90’s, the film will allow Captain Marvel to have her own story apart from Iron Man and Captain America, while still meeting familiar characters like Samuel Jackson’s Nick Fury.

Captain Marvel will also be directed by Anna Boden, who is the first female director to helm a Marvel film. Boden described the character, saying: “This is not a superhero who’s perfect or otherworldly or has some godlike connection, but what makes her special is just how human she is.” She went on to add: “And she can be headstrong and reckless and doesn’t always make the perfect decisions for herself. But at her core, she has so much heart and so much humanity — and all of its messiness.”
