While filming A Star is Born, Bradley Cooper improvised a line that cut Lady Gaga’s self-esteem. The actor explained what happened in a recent interview.

The scene in question shows a drunk Jackson, Cooper’s character, insulting Ally, Lady Gaga’s character, while she’s in the bath. In the final take, the actor laid an unscripted line on Lady Gaga, calling Ally “ugly”. When you watch the movie, you’ll see how real the hurt on her face is.

“That wasn’t an actor trying to get something out of another actor,” Cooper explained to News.Au. “That was two characters. What Jackson does to her in that moment is go to the most vulnerable place. That’s what she shared with him early on at the cop bar [that she felt ugly], so it’s to story.”

Fortunately, because Cooper and Lady Gaga fostered such a solid relationship during filming, Cooper states that it “never felt like a violation.”

A Star is Born is in theaters now.
