The FDA issued a warning to limit black licorice consumption as it can cause heart problems. Some symptoms, according to Delish, include “abnormal heart rhythms, high blood pressure, swelling, lethargy, and congestive heart failure after eating too much black licorice.”
People over 40 should be especially wary, reports FDA spokesperson Peter Cassell. The FDA advises that age group not consume more than two ounces a day, or four small pieces.
What makes black licorice cause heart problems is the ingredient glycyrrhizin. It can cause a decrease in the body’s potassium, which leads the symptoms listed above.
