This really is the end of an era. Best Buy is planning to pull CDs from all of its stores by July first and Target could be next. Target is reportedly now requiring its music suppliers sell them inventory on a consignment basis and pay for unsold inventory, a big change from its previous policy. This really shouldn’t come as too big of a surprise as most of us have moved away from buying CD’s and instead buying music through iTunes or using streaming services like Apple Music or Spotify. CD sales have been on the decline. In 2001, more than 800 million CDs were sold in the US, but that number is now closer to 89 million.
