5-Year-Old Empties Her Piggy Bank To Pay For Classmates’ Milk
“She doesn’t understand the impact she’s made, but now she knows she can do whatever she puts her mind to.”

Kindergartner Sunshine Oelfke went home after school and emptied her piggy bank onto the living room floor.
Her grandmother, Jackie Oelfke, told CBS News, as she as watched Sunshine count out all of her coins and wadded up bills she couldn’t help wondering what she was up to.
“I’m going to take it for milk money. I’m taking it for my friend Layla,” she explained. “She doesn’t get milk — her mom doesn’t have milk money and I do.”
Together they took her life savings, $30, to the Principle at Birchview Elementary School where they found out about half of the kids in Sunshine’s class of 20 kids can’t afford the milk, which costs $0.45 a carton.
Jackie posted a video on Facebook about her granddaughter’s generosity, which has now been viewed over 5,000 times.

After people responded with offers to help other children who couldn’t afford milk during snack time, Jackie decided to try to raise $700 to cover the cost of milk for the entire semester.
Within a week of setting up a GoFundMe page, she raised over $1,000, which will allow every student in Sunshine’s class to have free milk all year, according to CBS.
“She doesn’t understand the impact she’s made,” Jackie said. “But now she knows she can do whatever she puts her mind to.”
