If you noticed that this 4th of July was a little crazier than most, you weren’t wrong.

Sacramento Fire Department spokesperson, Keith Wade told The Sacramento Bee, “It’s my opinion that that was one of the worst nights I’ve seen.”

In the days leading up to the holiday there were two structure fires that were confirmed to have been caused by illegal fireworks. Additionally crews had to deal with dozens of grass fires throughout Elk Grove and Sacramento County.

The Sacramento Police Department also had one of the highest rates reports of illegal firework ever. Calls reporting illegal fireworks were up 11.5 percent. Meanwhile a special task force seized 2,333 pounds of illegal fireworks, compared to less than 150 pounds last year.

“It’s unfortunate and it’s irresponsible and I think as a community we can do better,” Wade said. “Next year, I hope that people can kind of wake up to it.”
