It’s a powerful photo, and tells the story of what many women have to go through. In vitro fertilisation is the only solution for a lot of families. It doesn’t come easy either, it’s still a multi-year, painful, emotional process.

Patricia and Kimberly O’Neill wanted to have a baby, so they tried. They tried, and tried, and kept trying. Finally on August 10th, their baby was born. The whole process took them a very specific “4 years, 7 attempts, 3 miscarriages and 1,616 shots.” Every one of those hormone syringes was saved over that time, for the whole 4 years. A photographer, Samantha Packer, was asked to do the newborn photoshoot. On one condition – that she use all of those syringes in some of the photos.

Samantha says it was a great experience, and that she was honored to be asked to do something like this. It was her idea to arrange the syringes in the heart shape, because it was a good symbol of the family’s journey. Samantha “chose to align them in a heart with all of the needles facing inward so that it would be both beautiful and powerful and show the love that brought this child.” After the photo started getting shared around social media, the O’Neills said “we would just hope that our picture can give others hope and perseverance to push forward.” It’s certainly a powerful photo, and does tell the painful story of what they went through to start their family.
