Some changes are afoot with the Oscars. The program will now be shorter and there’s a new category: Outstanding Achievement in Popular Film.

The Academy didn’t quite specify what that category means, exactly. They only wrote that “eligibility requirements and other key details will be forthcoming”. Some are already pushing back on this addition. One of Vox’s movie critics wrote on Twitter what many are thinking:

“It will have the same effect as the Animated/Documentary/Foreign Language categories, where movies are essentially ghettoized from winning ‘the real award.’ If a blockbuster is good, Nominate It For Best Picture.”

The broadcast is also being shortened to a strict three hours, with only certain categories being televised.

According to Pitchfork, the Academy revealed that next year’s Oscars will take place on Feb. 24. In 2020, the ceremony will air earlier on Feb. 9.
