Meghan Markle’s dad, Thomas, revealed what his daughter said when he called to say he couldn’t make the wedding.

The 74-year-old initially was supposed to walk the Duchess down the aisle. Unfortunately, due to an unexpected surgery, Thomas was unable to make the royal wedding at all. He told U.K.’s Good Morning Britain:

Meghan cried, I’m sure — she did cry — and they both said, ‘Take care of yourself, we are really worried about you.'”

“They said the important thing is that I get better,” he continued. “The unfortunate thing now is that I’m a footnote in one of the greatest moments in history instead of a dad walking his daughter down the aisle. It was a very emotional moment. I regretted it because I really wanted to walk her down the aisle. But I’m thankful for how it all went.”

On the big day, Meghan walked the first part of the aisle on her own, then was later escorted by Prince Charles.

“Watching it was difficult for me because I wasn’t there, but at the same time…I couldn’t have been more proud,” Thomas shared. “How can I ask for a better replacement than Charles? I was thrilled to tears that he was doing that for me. I just wish it had been my hand holding my daughter, not his. But he was wonderful to them.”
