You May Soon Have To Request A Straw At Sit-Down Restaurants In California

By on May 31, 2018

A newly introduced bill in California could ban sit-down restaurants from giving out plastic straws. The bill, which passed the Assembly yesterday, would require sit-down restaurants only provide single-use plastic straws if requested. Democrat Assemblyman Ian Calderon of Whittier authored the bill and says it’s a way to lessen the buildup of trash in the oceans. Opponents say the legislation will make it harder for restaurants to do business in California and say instead they should focus on harsher punishments for people who litter. If passed, restaurants would get two warnings before being fined $25/day for additional violations, with an annual fine limit of $300. The bill now heads to the Senate.
