Keith Urban has long been open about his own personal struggles with addiction and drug abuse. Following Demi Lovato’s recent hospitalization related to an apparent drug overdose, Urban offered his own personal wisdom to share with the young pop star. According to ET Online, Urban appeared on the Australian morning show, Today Extra, where he offered well wishes to Lovato alongside advise from personal experience. Clarifying that he new nothing about Lovato or the situation personally, Urban still advised her to have “…good people around her and a willingness to want to live a different way if that’s what she wants to do.”

Both Keith Urban and Demi Lovato have shared an open attitude regarding their past battles with addiction. Urban revealed, in a 2016 feature with Rolling Stone, some insight into his own struggles with alcohol and prescription drug addiction. The singer recalled how he regretted his inability to stop drinking and abusing drugs, and the time lost as a result of his addictions. He has also touched on the importance of strong support systems in the form of family and friends who cared about his well being.

Urban has also cited how important his wife, Nicole Kidman, was in pushing him to seek help and check himself into rehab to face his addictions and get better. In a 2007 interview with People, he said, “Nicole listened to her heart and did what she felt was the right thing to do. To see that kind of love in action, that’s very moving and deeply inspiring and just makes me want to be a better man.”   Urban has been sober now for over a decade, and believes that Lovato can overcome her addictions as well.  “It’s all up to her,” Keith Urban concluded in his interview.
