Caltrans just announced Hwy. 1 to Big Sur will reopen earlier than expected! By the end of July, instead of mid-September, you’ll be able to take scenic Hwy 1 to Big Sur via San Luis Obispo County once its reopened after mud slides closed the highway for more than a year. Caltrans has been building a new road on top of the landslide debris, a project that cost $54 million. Businesses who have been hurt by the closure who rely on tourism are thrilled the highway will open for the second half of summer.
