While the rest of us are battling our own human flu, the dog flu is also spreading across the country.

The Canine Influenza Virus (CIV) is now advancing across California with several cases diagnosed in NorCal.

The dog flu is different from the human kind and does not spread between humans and dogs. There are similar symptoms though, including coughing, runny nose, fever, lethargy and lack of appetite.

According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the illness tends to spread among dogs in close quarters, such as this in the same house, kennels and shelters.

“Your pet might be at risk if you frequent dog parks, board your dog, go to the groomer or use pet daycare,” Dr. Phillip Brown, a veterinarian in Springfield, Missouri, told KWQC.

The SPCA recommends owners watch for signs of the dog flu. Vaccinations are available for dogs in the at-risk category.
