The California Department of Public Health is releasing cellphone safety guidelines months after a judge ruled that the agency should release the findings of a study it did not make public about how to reduce exposure to electromagnetic fields, or radiation from your phone.

The EMFs or, radiation, is created by your phone when they send and receive signals, which can affect your body. While more research needs to be done, studies have shown a link between EMFs and brain cancer and EMFs and fertility problems.

To reduce exposure, the health department recommends not keeping your phone in your pocket and moving it away from your bed at night.

Other things you can do? Keep your phone away from your body, reduce your phone use when the signal is weak.

Reduce the use of cellphones to stream audio or video, or to download or upload large files, remove headsets when you’re not on a call and avoid products that claim to block radio frequency energy; as they may actually increase your exposure.
